The smallest known living organisms belong to a unique genus of bacteria that lack cell walls called Mycoplasma. They are a frequent cause of cell culture contamination in lab-grown cells. Their small size and ubiquitous distribution mean they can go undetected in seemingly sterile cell cultures. Contaminated cells and reagents can be a source of Mycoplasma contamination. This contamination can lead to an alteration in cell characteristics like changes in morphology, physiology and metabolism which can lead to inaccurate experimental conclusions.
Many studies have shown that a high percentage of cell cultures around the globe are contaminated with Mycoplasma. Our Mycoplasma detection and elemination kits allows researchers to detect infections early on, thus preventing more widespread contamination, and avoid making incorrect observations based on cultures that may be hiding infections. Our improved PCR Mycoplasma Detection Kit II can detect additional Mycoplasma and Acholeplasma strains. In fact, the kit has a high degree of sensitivity for over 300 Mycoplasma strains while minimizing the risk of false positives.
For Mycoplasma prevention or elimination, we also offer De-Plasma II. De-Plasma II is an improved reagent that contains five different antimicrobial compounds with three separate anti-Mycoplasma targets to eliminate Mycoplasma. This mixture is effective against all known Mycoplasma species.
