γ-Mangostin is a xanthone naturally occuring in the mangosteen fruit. It has been widely researched for its variety of anticancer activity, including cell proliferation inhibiton, aromatase inactivation for the treatment of breast cancer, chemopreventative and antimetastatic activity, enhancement of natural killer (NK) cells, and prostoglandin-based anti-infalmmatory activity. It has also shown promising inhibition of HIV infection.
γ-Mangostin is soluble in alcohol or ether, and practically insoluble in water.
