Matrine is a natural alkaloid extracted from the Chinese herb Sophora flavescens. Matrine has demonstrated antiviral and anti-inflammatory bioactivity with relatively low toxicity. It has been used for cancer resarch and has been shown to induce apoptosis in many human cancer cell lines. Additionally, it acts as a nematicide against pine wood nematode, the causal agent of pine wilt. It alleviates neuro-inflammation and oxidative stress.
Matrine is soluble in water, benzene, chloroform, ether, and carbon disulfide.

|Mechanism of Action||Matrine can regulate the expression of proliferation- and apoptosis-related genes or proteins, such as eIF4E, E2F-1, Fas, FasL, Bcl-2, Bax, and caspases.|
|Cancer Research Applications||Matrine has demonstrated anti-cancer properties with various cell lines. In both in vitro and in vivo studies of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), Matrine inhibited cell viability and induced apoptosis in cell lines and primary AML cells in a dose and time-dependent manner (Zhang et al, 2012).|
