Mycoplasma bacteria and susceptibility to antibiotics.
Mycoplasma are a unique genus of bacteria that lack a cell wall and are the smallest living organisms currently known. Mycoplasma do not synthesize peptidoglycan, and therefore, are unaffected by many antibiotics including glycopeptide and beta lactam antibiotics that target Gram-positive and Gram-negative cell walls. Mycoplasma are also a major source of eukaryotic cell culture contamination which can alter cellular characteristics.
